Grand Western Canal

The Grand Western Canal country park weaves its eleven miles through mid Devon from Tiverton right to the border with Somerset. It makes for easy level walking or cycling, with a profusion of wildlife, fishing or even a trip on a horse drawn barge. These are some of the things I saw today.

The Tivertonia looked like it was being prepared for the start of the new season and my photo didn’t turn out well so this is one I found, courtesy of the bbc, of the barge on a summer trip.

About Lucid Gypsy

Gilly Mbachu Goldsworthy is a mum to two kids that are supposed to be grown up and mma to a four year old and a new born baby boy. None of that means that I am grown up though! I love writing – travel and quite edgy fiction – and being an OU student for a degree which remains to be seen. What I do best though is counselling; I’ve been privileged to work with many people through big changes.

a shaggy horse should be warm in winter … and birds thinking about spring …such a very peaceful calm walk along that landscape groomed by man for thousands of years … i am intrigued by the three bears thingy, is it a huge tree trunk carved for seating by the path? thanks for taking me along with you gilly!

It was a lovely day to be out in the countryside and I needed the exercise! Yes Duke and his two companions stay outside in all but the harshest weather. The tree trunk seat made me think of Goldilocks and the Three Bears :-)

  4. such a lovely collection of pictures! i just love this post … thanks for sharing.

  5. I love the photo looking under the arch of the bridge, but where were you standing to take it – in the water? Is there another bridge nearby, or does the stream curve so that you could stand on the bank and still get this view? But moving quickly on, your captions are clever too – that horse is probably one of the hardest working “people” on the canal! Meanwhile I have to wonder how anybody could lose a tool belt – why would you take it off while working?

Anyway, Gilly, it must have been a good walk, and thank you for sharing the photos with us!

:-) I was using a zoom lens and the canal curves quite a bit! It was an odd place to find the belt in the hedge with no houses nearby, perhaps he was working on the hedge and it broke?
It was a lovely walk, we did about four miles with blue sky all the way.

  6. Great pictures. Everyone is at rest, except for the poor horse. That’s what he gets for horsing around. Blessings.
